Jean-Baptiste GAVOT (1768-1839) Small portable walnut and elm "serinette" or "perroquette" organ with ten pipes for playing dozens of tunes. A plate indicates the tunes on two cylinders (the second is missing). The sides of the case are painted on a black background, with a scene of an organ player on the front and a rose on the back. The sides feature the Moon and Sun. Above is a parrot in a medallion, surrounded by musical instruments. The corners of the box are decorated with climbing roses. Iron crank and basswood cylinder Ten-notch iron register, pinned cylinder axle and two sliding side registers Two rows of ten tin pipes and skin bellows Marked on the cylinder "N°1" and "Gavot & Fils Facteur d'Orgue ... Mirecourt Lorraine ...." France, circa 1830 H. 30 cm - Base: 36 x 22 cm (slight damage to veneer, one cylinder missing) Note: The "serinettes" or "perroquettes" organs were used to train parrots. An example by the same builder can be found at the Musée de la Musique Mécanique in Les Gets and at the Musée de la Philharmonie in Paris (inv V.Mi.406). The Musée de Mirecourt also has several serinettes and perroquettes in its collections.
