School of the second half of the 19th century - Lot 232
School of the second half of the 19th century Martyrdom of Saint Blandine Painted canvas on loose canvas This scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Blandine, an episode in the history of the first Christians in 172 AD. H. 2 m - L. 3 m In an amphitheater, in front of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Saint Blandina is delivered to wild beasts, in particular lions, who refuse to attack her. She is finally killed by a bull. This scene was inspired by a copperplate engraving by Jean LUYKEN (1649-1712), a talented artist and poet known for his scenes depicting religious persecution. The second half of the 19th century saw the development of painted canvases to the detriment of wool and silk tapestries, the latter sometimes also called "feint tapestries". This technique has been around for a long time, with the famous Finti Arazzi collection by Cardinal Ottoboni in 17th-century Rome.
