Babanki mask, Cameroon, wood - Lot 219
Babanki mask, Cameroon, wood H.86cmxW.36cm Crests allegorizing the head of an elephant, worn during performances by powerful associations, could be found in many parts of the Grassland. Like the leopard, the pachyderm was considered a royal symbol. It only adorned objects reserved for royalty or notables. The elephant, a symbol of royalty, was often depicted in a very abstract way. Although this mask with its saucer-shaped ears is to some extent stylized, its long trunk and tusks make it easily identifiable as an elephant. In the Oku kingdom (Bamenda), possible origin of this mask, elephant masks are called "Ketam".
