Transparent smoked glass tumbler centered with a rich decora - Lot 56
Transparent smoked glass tumbler centered with a rich decoration bearing the coat of arms of Antoine III de Gramont, also known as the Maréchal de Gramont, and inscribed "DUX GRAMONT", dated 1623 (?) with star decorations. Traces of gilding around the rim and a string of enameled pearls. The base is hemmed with an enameled net. France, mid-17th century H. 9.5 cm - Diam. 7.5 cm Note: Antoine III de Gramont (1604-1678) was a Conseiller d'État in 1637, then Lieutenant General of Normandy and Picardy. Appointed Marshal of France in 1641 following his victorious campaign against the Huguenots under Richelieu, and later in the wars against Spain. In 1644, he became viceroy of Navarre and Béarn, and duke and peer in 1648, before becoming minister of state in 1655 and colonel of the French Guards in 1661. As ambassador to Madrid, he organized Louis XIV's wedding, before ending up as ambassador to Frankfurt.
