Fontainebleau gogotte in the shape of a sailboat - Lot 345
Fontainebleau gogotte in the shape of a sailboat On base Total height: 32 - Width: 34 cm Gogottes de Fontainebleau are concretions of siliceous sand. These sands were deposited in dune, coastal and deltaic environments during the Lower Oligocene (33.9 to 28.1 million years ago). The formation of the gogottes took place during the cold periods of the Quaternary. The purity of Fontainebleau sands gives these extracted concretions a smooth, regular surface. Since the 1970s, they have been known as "gogottes" or "sandstone dolls". Louis XIV appreciated these strange shapes, and commissioned numerous gogottes to decorate the basins and fountains in the Château de Versailles park, notably the Trois Fontaines and Encelade groves.
