Description of the 27 zones of activity on the back, titled "DOCTEUR GALL'S SYSTEM OF THE CEREBRAL ORGANS". Horn interior Circa 1800-1830 Diam. 8 - Height 2 cm (chips and cracks) Note : The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris conserves a fine example of this type of box from the Legacy of Baroness Henri de Rothschild. Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) was an Austrian neuroanatomist, renowned for his method of dissecting the brain. He founded a new discipline called cranioscopy or craniology in 1800. Cranioscopy" was renamed phrenology in 1810 by Gaspar Spursheim, a pupil of Dr. Gall.
