CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718) - Lot 266
CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718) Engraving representing two terrestrial and celestial globes in spindles from the book "Libro Dei Globi". The celestial part bears the mention "All Illustriss S.Franc: Galparoli Nobile Fanese" with a watermark representing a saint and a monk and the terrestrial part a coat of arms and the number 345. Mention " Aut: il P. Cosmografo Coronelli in Venetia 1693 " on the base, as well as a scale for the diameter of the final globe. The present plate comes from the second version of the "Libro Dei Globi", summarizing Coronelli's work on globes. 49 x 34 cm Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650-1718) was apprenticed to a printer before joining the Franciscans in 1665. After studying astronomy, Coronelli began working as a geographer and globe maker in 1678. Following a commission for globes for the Duke Farnese of Parma, he was invited to Rome to build the globes for Louis XIV between 1681 and 1683. These globes of more than 3 meters in diameter, now preserved at the BNF, are presented under the name of globes of Marly. He became famous all over Europe. Returning to Venice in 1684, he became a cartographer at the convent of Sta Maria Gloriosa de Frari. From 1697 he began to publish a series of atlases as well as a production of terrestrial and celestial globes. Coronelli then published the "Libro dei Globi" in which he described plates for five sizes of globes (45, 30, 15, 10 and 5 cm). Due to the success of his work, he published 4 versions in 1688, 1692-1693, 1699 and 1707.
