Shirazi chest, probably India for the Iranian... - Lot 475 - Euvrard & Fabre
Shirazi chest, probably India for the Iranian market, 19th century Rectangular in shape, made of hardwood and lined on three sides with openwork copper alloy plates and nails with rosettes or geometric motifs. In the center of the front, a lock with a palmette cut-out allowing to open a large hinged lid, and along the base, three drawers each with a pair of handles. Two other handles are placed on the side for transport. The name 'shirazi' given to this type of chest, in reference to the city of Shiraz in southern Iran, suggests the place where this type of object abounded, although they were more likely to have been made in India as the use of hardwood suggests. Designed as dowry chests, they were used for the export of foodstuffs, spices, carpets or silks, as far away as East Africa, if we are to believe the abundance of this type of chests in Zanzibar, which also gave them their name. Several of them are preserved in the museum of the former Sultan's palace in the Tanzanian archipelago. Another example can be seen at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
