Model of the galley La Reale in wood. Faithful reproduction of Louis XIV's galley, composed of 48 oars, two rudders, two masts with triangular sails, a cannon in the bow and a cabin in the stern. Galleys are a type of ship with oars and sails that have been sailing in the Mediterranean since antiquity. In France, convicts were often used as rowers in this type of ship. The galley was launched in May 1694, it was the main galley of the kingdom and was to display the power of Louis XIV's France.
