Interesting whole sperm whale (or scrimshaw)... - Lot 224 - Euvrard & Fabre
Interesting whole sperm whale (or scrimshaw) tooth finely engraved from the transatlantic liner "Great Eastern". Probably a souvenir representing the ship seen from the side with its technical characteristics (year of construction, length, width, weight, speed). The Great Eastern is a British transatlantic liner launched in 1858 and considered as the first of its time with a capacity of 4000 passengers and 211 meters long. Designed by Isambard Brunel, an English engineer who developed the railway, transatlantic navigation, and the radio. Until 1899 the ship held the record for the longest ship and, until 1901, the largest in the world. The ship was demolished in 1889 after multiple reconversions (laying of the first transatlantic cable, tourist attractions, ...). Work from the middle of the 19th century It is attached : A bone and silver comb souvenir in bone or ivory representing the ship and its name
