CHAS-LABORDE (1886 - 1941) PHILEMON ET BAUCIS Unsigned ink, caption in margin: -Good night darling -Good night my love, good night 28 x 21 cm Provenance: Sale Chas Laborde Bernay 27 April 2001 n°59 Philémon and Baucis were an old couple who turned into a tree at their death. Their story is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses: Zeus and Hermes are looking for a place to rest and "knock at a thousand doors, asking everywhere for hospitality; and everywhere hospitality is refused them. Only one house offers them shelter; it is a hut, a humble assembly of thatch and reeds. There, Philemon and the pious Baucis, united by a chaste hymen, have seen their best days pass; there, they have grown old together, enduring poverty, and by their tender care, making it softer and lighter".
