Lucien METIVET (1863 - 1932) CAUCHEMAR 1912 Charcoal... - Lot 9 - Euvrard & Fabre
Lucien METIVET (1863 - 1932) CAUCHEMAR 1912 Charcoal and Indian ink signed Luc (pseudonym of Métivet) at the bottom left, titled and captioned: The buyer of Regnault's "Salomé" dreams that after having cost him the eyes of his head, the daughter of Hérodiade claims the rest. 31 x 23 cm Note: Métivet alludes to one of Regnault's works that caused a sensation at the 1870 Salon and was then sold at the record price of 480,000 francs at the Landolfo Carcano sale at the Galerie Georges Petit in 1912, and which today decorates the picture rails of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The Council of the National Museums of France had tried in vain to acquire the painting for 200,000 francs before the sale. It is amusing to note that Métivet imagines a sequel to the painting by slightly changing the posture of Salome, who turns his head towards the sleeping buyer and grabs the dagger.
